Acting ...to make a difference

We demonstrate our liberal religious values through effective social action, providing leadership and creating partnerships in the local community and beyond.

There are many opportunities for social action at UUSM. Most of the work occurs in collaboration with other groups, such as Habitat For Humanity, Second Harvest Food Bank or Homework Central, just to name a few.

Members who are active in these other groups bring the organization and its activities to UUSM, and help bring participants from our congregation to the organization's projects and events, many of which occur right here.

The focal point for social justice activities is the UUSM Social Justice Council.  The mission of the Social Justice Council is to lead, organize, educate, and inspire the congregation to fulfill UUSM's Acting Purpose through the creation of justice-making opportunities that are accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities.

The Social Justice Council works with both UUSM-led projects and external social justice organizations and collaborates with ministers, staff, lay leaders, and congregants to carry out social action in the UUSM community and beyond. The reach of the congregation extends as far as the Philippines where we have a partner church and extends worldwide through the UU Service Committee.

It was once said that the moral test of Government is how that Government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.
